Origins of leather making

Posted on

Most leathers have a printed number on the back side of the hide with the number of square feet or square meter for that specific skin. The square footage of genuine leather refers to the total workable surface area.It doesn't indicate a linear measurement as leather hides shapes are irregular, each animal is different that's why not two skins are the same. Due to the natural irregularity of the skin's shape ,this product is sold by area ,in our website in square meter. Measurement are taken at the tannery using specialised machines that measure the whole surface of the skin including fringe areas. As all the skins are different you will be sent the leather in their irregular shape. Our genuine leather is a natural product and may come with natural imperfections. If you have any particular requests, please remember to let us know and we will do our best to meet your requirements.

Size of Leather

To produce leather animal skins and hides are treated with chemicals to preserve them and make them suitable for use as footwear, clothing, leather goods and crafts. The preservation process is a chemical treatment called tanning. The term hide is used to designate the skin of a larger animal (cowhide or horsehide) skin refers to smaller animal ( calfskin or kidskin). Leather making is an ancient art that has been practised for more than 6.000 years, when fresh skins where dried in the sun. The process of vegetable tanning was developed by the Egyptians about 400 BC.
